Hi my name is Hector El Guajiro. People always ask and always guess...wrong. I'm not Russian, not Polish, not Jewish, nor from Albania. I am Spanish/Mexican. Well 25% Mexican. Since I was born, I have grown up around music and dancing because my father is a DJ. Being born and raised in Texas, I soon found myself enjoying dancing to Spanish/Mexican folklore music at the age of 8. It wasn't until the age of 12 that I really wanted spend time on the
dance floor as a main
hobby. At 15 years of age I started to pick up on my dancing, trying to perfect
Cumbia dance in my town. Then I tried other dances like Merengue and Salsa but
was not excited with those dances AT FIRST......
Coming to New York in 2000, I quickly started to
learn and advance in
Merengue and Bachata. Then I decided to give another shot at Salsa since
I had a bad experience in Texas. Soon I became very good at dancing street salsa
until I went to a Salsa club and had my first real club experience. SO MANY
PROFESSIONAL DANCERS!!! I soon wanted to learn those sophisticated turn patterns
that everybody was doing, and I started to copy the patterns and tried to dance
with people. WELL, THEY WERE NOT HAPPY!!! Then somebody told me, "you have to
walk before you can run. Learn the steps and salsa timing on 2!!!" That's when I
began taking classes with "The Mambo King" Eddie Torres and learned how to dance
salsa on 2. Then I furthered my knowledge and began studying Afro- Carribean
movement, Cha Cha and styling with
Frankie Martinez.
In 2004, I joined The Revelation
Dance
Company
where I was trained as a performer and a choreographer. I
also expand my dance training to
Latin Jazz with Michael
Felder, Assistant Director of the company. As part of The Revelation Dancers, I
have performed in Puerto Rico, L.A., Boston, Philidelphia, Washington D.C. and
other local events. In 2006, I met Cynthia La China who joined Revelation Dance
Company and soon we found that we shared the same goal and ideas as performers
and instructors. Cynthia and I co-founded the LSD Projects (Latin
Soul Dance Projects) where we draw inspirations from other dances (Tango,
Afro Cuban, Latin Jazz, Modern dance, Samba, Ballroom and Funk) to incorporate
into ours. We have performed as a duet in Hawaii, Boston and will continue to
spread our dance technique and teaching around the world.
Having been dancing Latin
dance professionally for 8 years, I want to offer a different approach to
dancing and new Ideas as a performer and instructor along with Cynthia. I want
students to understand body
movement after they learn the basics, so they can become an instrument in
the music. They can enjoy the dance while having the freedom to have their own
style with basic techniques. Cynthia and I continue to take classes in other
forms of dance so that we continue to grow. And at the same time share with
students our knowledge so that they can also be great dancers simply for fun or
for the serious minds.
